Luke traces Jesus' incarnation, introduction, public ministry, rejection, subsequent teaching in view of His rejection, the cross, resurrection and ascension. Even though a Gentile, Luke emphasizes the kingdom program, with Israel's place in the kingdom.

Jesus' teaching is seen in short parables, which hide the truth from those hardened against Him, yet prepares and instructs those responsive to Him. Overall Jesus calls those who follow him to serve others and to deny themselves by taking up their own cross, just as He took up His.

Matthew wrote primarily to Jews who knew the Old Testament. He wrote to present Jesus as the Messiah to Israel and to record the Israel's attitude towards Him as Messiah. Matthew gives us the genealogy, presentation, and the authentification of Jesus as the Christ Messiah. Matthew then shows the nation of Israel's opposition to and rejection of Jesus as the Christ followed by Jesus' rejection of Israel due to her unbelief. He then records the death and resurrection of Christ. He concludes with Christ commissioning the disciples.

BAM - Zephaniah

Zephaniah 1:14-15 - The great day of Yahweh is near. It is near, and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of Yahweh. The mighty man cries there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements.

Zephaniah 2:3 - Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh's anger.

Summary

Zephaniah preached to Judah and nations during Josiah's restoration in 630 BC. He preaches constantly that God's judgement will come and all sin will be punished. He concludes that blessing will come with the Messiah who will be a great cause for praise and singing.

BAM - Habakkuk

Habbakuk preached repentance to Judah n 697BC, but they refused to change. His message was that God's people should live by faith alone. Habakkuk does not always understand God's ways, but concluded by praising God's wisdom.

BAM - Nahum

Summary

Nahum preached in Judah in 660BC against Ninevah. Ninevah have forgotten about God and how they came to repentance under Jonah. Nahum announces God's judgement upon Ninevah, as they have abandoned God and returned to violence, idolatry and arrogance. Ninevah will be destroyed and never rebuilt!

Obadiah preached 840 BC. to Edom and Israel. Speaking against Edom, Obadiah preaches that there are no pleas to return, no words of consolation or hope and no deliverance from God's destruction. Obadiah, meanwhile speaks to Israel about God restoring them to Himself.

Internally however, greed and injustice were rife and people were growing hard towards God's discipline. Amos, visualizes the coming judgement of God and tries to mobilize the nation towards repentance.

BAM - Lamentations

Yet in the midst of turmoil, Jeremiah writes that God's faithfulness is great. God has never failed him, will provide for him in the future, and Jeremiah finds comfort and hope in the God that he knows, serves and loves.

Key Verses

Isaiah 9:6-7 - For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.

Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Summary

The first 39 chapters of the book of Isaiah tells of God's judgement upon immoral and idolatrous men. Isaiah preaches to both Israel & Judah from 740 BC. - 680 BC. Together with the surrounding nations and the whole earth, they have sinned against God. God's judgement will come, because sin cannot go unpunished forever. The final 27 chapters declare a message of hope - the Messiah is coming as a Saviour and a King to bear both a cross and a crown.

Song of Solomon 2:1 & 14- As a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. My dove in the clefts of the rock, In the hiding places of the mountainside, Let me see your face. Let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.

Song of Solomon 8:7 - Many waters can't quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned.

Summary

The book of the Song of Solomon tells a love song depicting the wedding of a young shepherdess Shulamite girl to King Solomon. Ii is also a dramatic analogy of Israel as God's soon to be bride, and therefore also the Church as the Bride of the Messiah.

Ecclesiastes 2:26 - For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 - 14 - This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. 12:14 For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.

Summary

The book of Ecclesiastes tells the story of life’s emptiness when trying to be happy separate from God. The preacher concludes that life with God leads to true happiness.

The book of Proverbs, tells of wisdom and how to live a godly and skilful life. It provides God’s people with a way to deal successfully with the practical affairs of everyday life, living God’s way.
